Adrian learnt string-bass and trumpet whilst at school in Nottingham, and played soprano cornet with the RAF Station Band where his father was stationed.
Joining the Royal Artillery's Junior Musicians Troop he played many different wind instruments, and after a year at Kneller Hall, The Royal Military School of Music, he joined the Woolwich Band (the main band of The Royal Artillery), where he remained for the duration of his Army service. Adrian played the string-bass throughout his service, also playing BBb bass and euphonium on parade and in cabarets, as well as other instruments including bass fanfare trumpet.
When he left the Army, Adrian taught as a peripatetic instrument teacher in schools, and ran an ATC (Air Training Corps) youth band, also assisting with the startup of the Gillingham (Kent) Youth Marching Band. Adrian has always maintained a healthy finger on the pulse of music.
In 2009 medical issues left Adrian unable to blow a brass instrument any more. This has offered him the opportunity to become involved again in conducting. Looking to keep his brain active he also helped to start up Felixstowe Community Radio (107.5FM) where he presented a weekly brass band show for over three years, recording several of the local bands for broadcast.
After a very impressive trial-rehearsal, Adrian took up the baton of Stowmarket Concert Band in November 2014, and promptly succeeded in preparing for a number of excellent and very well-received concerts. We are all looking forward to working together, and welcome Adrian and his experience and humility to the Band.
After excellent service and commitment to the band we are sorry that Adrian Waite is retiring due to ill health. We will miss his humour, his beard and his expertise, and will now need to consider hiring a 'real' Santa for this Christmas. We wish him very well for the future, and thank him gratefully for his time with Stowmarket Concert Band. We have kept in contact since his departure and look forward to welcoming him again at our own Christmas Concert on 17th December.
