We have a strong membership, currently around 40 in the main band and 24 in the training band. As a non-contesting band, we welcome anyone who plays for their own enjoyment. We play a mix of crowd-pleasing favourites, arrangements of modern music, traditional marches, a few challenging 'work at' pieces and even some arrangements by members of the band! Suggestions for pieces to play are always welcomed by players, audience members or people booking the band.
The main band always welcomes contact from potential new players; though we are larger than they typical brass band we can always explore making room for additional players to further improve the authentic brass band sound, and this can help cover absences for family and work commitments. As a brass band requires up to 10 cornets, we welcome cornets in particular! We also currently have scope for accepting an additional Eb bass. Whether you are in the area for a short while or on a long term basis, you would be made welcome. Whilst there is no formal audition or set standard for the main band, we aim for all players to be happy and comfortable with what they are playing, so if you are learning, or returning to playing after a break, our training band may be more suitable, at least to begin with. If you're not sure where you are best suited, see our contact page and get in touch.
The main band rehearses weekly on Mondays from 7.30pm to 9.25pm at Abbot's Hall Primary School. We do not rehearse on Bank Holidays, but do throughout school holidays. Occasionally we have private engagements on a Monday, so it's always best to get in touch before coming along.
As well as several members visiting a local pub after practice each week, we also have social events such as bowling, BBQs, quiz nights, meals out, trips to the Rock Panto, camping weekends, trips to concerts by the world's top brass bands and orchestras, and even tobogganing (see photos here!).
If you want to come along to a practice, and particularly if you need an instrument, just get in touch and we'll make sure we have music, an instrument, a seat and someone to meet you!
