The section is currently headed by Kristian Leech who has been in and around the band for around 35 years. Joining him is the talented Tammy Denny, a very experienced cornetist and music teacher, Phil Pursglove and Graham Shipp. When he is not away at school, Ali Mason adds to the solid front row! Although 4 'front cornets' is the norm, we would welcome another to join us to balance with our 'more than complete' and impressively swelling other sections.
Our 'back row' is led by Soprano cornet, the lovely Stephen Horrex. He is joined by Claire Jones and Graham Brown (who features on some of the original 1970s SCB vinyls) on repiano cornet. Making further contributions to the cornet ranks we also have Karmen Yoldi, Andrew Scott, Martin Fisher, Oliver Hampton, Sam Forge and Jacob Chapman.
Pamela Harland, having previously also been in our cornet section for many years now returns to her favourite position, Flugelhorn. Melanie Blanchard is our solo horn player, and is joined by Sue Blackaby and Geoff Bull on 1st horn, with Sam Brett and John Kirk on 2nd horn. Dave Lower is also signed up and with us on horn when he can make it.
Greg Wright has been with the band for over 30 years, and sits on Principal Euphonium. He is joined by Alison Jeffries and Dawn Caley, and on Baritone we have the wealth of David Welham, Zoe Balaam, David Kirk and Callan Leech-Sinclair. Our long-standing member and Trustee, Tom Clarke (with 35 years on board), is currently living farther afield, but we love welcoming him when he's around.
Probably our most experienced section in the band, Richard Chapman leads on solo trombone who, despite being just a boy, is currently in his 5th decade in the band, and makes a really fantastic impersonation of Musical Director when Rob is absent. He's joined by another former MD and local 'celebrity' Barry Fuell, and Poppy Copping. Bass trombones complete the lineup in the form of Polly Sinclair and Suzannah Howard who we welcome back after a number of years away.
Our very experienced Bass section includes Roger Keeling, who many will remember in the Band's long history as leader, deputy MD, and solo trombonist, and Ian Grimes completes the lineup on Eb Bass, whilst the invaluable Stephen Gillott, Keith Challis (also featuring on the 1970s SCB vinyls) and Martin Welham put in the work in the Bb Bass boiler room, and together they rack up a huge amount of experience and length of service.
If you are interested in joining the Band, please visit our membership page or training band page, or contact us for more details. This page gives you some information about our current main band, and you can meet our Musical Director here.
We have a really strong membership of around 40 musicians in the main band alone (more than the standard brass-band of 25 plus percussion), and together we can draw upon literally hundreds of years of combined experience within the band, plus many of our members have invaluable brass experiences farther afield. We are very proud to continue great relationships with many other local bands, and are pleased to be able to mutually share resources around the region. Our permanent members are as follows:
Mark Bull has been our talented 'kit' player for a number of years and, after a very short break due to work commitments, realised he couldn't keep away so is back with us hitting lots of noisy things. We do have a set of timpani and other things to shake and wiggle, but Mark doesn't have enough arms, so there is a potential vacancy here.
